This course is for those who want to refresh and advance their knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and develop greater confidence in responding to everyday queries.

ʿĀlimiyyah students can sometimes lose touch with fiqh after the earlier years of their studies, or feel that they did not give it sufficient attention at the time. This can become particularly apparent after graduation, when imams, teachers and others working within their communities encounter the practical questions and demands of wider society and feel the need to reconnect with their fiqh or undertake a fresh study of it.

The Compact Advanced Islamic Jurisprudence Programme is designed with this in mind. At the heart of the programme is an advanced study of the Ikhtiyār, an important classical work of Hanafi fiqh that is less commonly studied as a core ʿĀlimiyyah text. Students will revisit the major chapters of Hanafi jurisprudence through the text’s distinctive approach to presenting, discussing and explaining legal rulings. This is complemented by a focused study of the Hanafi madhhab, bringing together its history and development, legal evidences and methodology, principles of usul, and their application to contemporary fiqhi questions.

The programme complements our original Advanced Islamic Jurisprudence Programme while offering a distinct route through the subject. Whereas the original programme centres its study around the Lubāb and provides a more extensive programme of study, the Compact Programme uses the Ikhtiyār and delivers its supplementary studies in a more concentrated format. The two programmes therefore offer different perspectives and approaches to the study of Hanafi fiqh, and students may benefit from either programme independently or from studying both.

Classes are scheduled later in the day than the original programme, providing an alternative for students whose work or other commitments make morning study difficult, while also making live attendance more accessible across a wider range of international time zones.

If you have been looking for an opportunity to revisit, strengthen and advance your study of fiqh alongside your existing commitments, the Compact Advanced Islamic Jurisprudence Programme provides a focused and accessible route to doing so.

What our students say about the program

“…The institute is built around a developed level of study, it broadens your mind to a new way of living. The style of teaching is very well adapted to the times we live in which is essential for any British Muslim seeking out Islam. I recommend the institute to all seekers of Islam and pray Allah makes it easy for you.”

Shirin Sheth, UK

“Alhamdulillah very pleased to have joined this course. A must take for grads of Dars e Nizami courses. The lessons create confidence for those serving their communities as imams, teachers etc. and make up for the deficiencies/laziness from the days of studying in madrassah. Masha’allah I can only describe the teachers as Gems, full of knowledge and also ready to help. Taking this course has opened up to me just how much more there is to learn!”

Zayd Mehtar, UK

“The Advanced Jurisprudence course has been a very beneficial experience for me. Not only are the instructors demonstrably knowledgeable in their respective fields, but they are great teachers. Students are encouraged to ask questions in class and instructors make themselves available through discussion forums.”

Umm Abdillah

“Despite being an online student and not being in-person at the Institute, I have found that the course has helped me to make the jump from simply sufficing with the text I am studying to regularly referring to other texts and resources to verify my understanding and to gain more depth, both because of the teachers and other students. It has also enabled me to understand the abwab of Fiqh much better than I had before, which in turn has increased my confidence when needing to convey masa’il to others.”

Imran Ahmed

“Immensely beneficial and completely interactive course, gave me the right understanding and confidence of even the most complex masa’il. In buyu’ (trade), it gave good insight in dealings with contracts of sharikah, mudarabah, waqf, hiba, wakalah, Kafalah, etc…… This course taught me to be responsible, liable, scrupulous and accountable in my everyday actions, dealings and speech. My personal message to Alims and Alimas is … take up these courses and develop yourselves in a short span of time, and become a source of guidance and spread the noor of this ilm in your community …. No words can do justice for what this course gave me. Alhamdulillah.”

Ikhtiyar: Selections from Imam al-Mawsili's (683H)

Al-Ikhtiyar li Ta'lil al-Mukhtar, which is an exposition of his earlier work, al-Mukhtar lil Fatwa.

The selections will include the chapters of worship (ibadaat), marriage, divorce, child custody, and Islamic commercial law.

Special attention will be given to the method of reading legal texts, extracting rulings and expanding knowledge and awareness of Hanafi jurists and the legal works of the school.

Each chapter will have a practical element where the application of legal rulings to contemporary cases will be exercised.

Understanding the Hanafi Madhhab

Alongside the study of al-Ikhtiyār, students will receive a focused introduction to the Hanafi madhhab: how it developed, how it works, and how it is applied in the contemporary world.

The course traces the historical development of the madhhab from Imam Abu Hanifah and his students through its subsequent spread and development, while introducing students to its major works and scholarly tradition. It also explores the legal reasoning that underpins the madhhab, including its approach to evidences, principles of usul and methods of deriving and defending legal rulings.

These foundations are then connected to the contemporary application of Hanafi fiqh through a selection of modern questions and debates, illustrating how the principles and inherited tradition of the madhhab continue to inform the treatment of new and changing circumstances.

This component provides a condensed treatment of material explored in greater depth in the main Advanced Islamic Jurisprudence Programme, giving students the essential background needed to better understand the development, methodology and contemporary application of the Hanafi school.
