The first level of Whitethread’s course, “Mastering the Fiqh of Menstruation,” was an in-depth study of Imam Ibn ‘Abidin al-Shami’s commentary on Birgivi’s Manual (Manhal al-Waridin). The course, taken by over 500 students, focused primarily on Imam Abu Yusuf’s rulings. However, students and instructors equally felt it would be beneficial to study Imam Muhammad’s opinion.

The second level of this course will now delve into relevant sections of Imam Farid al-Din ‘Alim ibn al-‘Ala’s Al-Fatawa al-Tatarkhaniyya (d. 786) and Imam Burhan al-Din Mahmud ibn Ahmad ibn Maza al-Bukhari’s Al-Muhit al-Burhani (d. 616). Students will attempt to extract foundational principles of Imam Muhammad’s opinion to understand his application of menstruation (hayd) and purity (tuhr) rulings. There will be a comparative analysis between the commonly applied views of Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad. We will also explore other important opinions within the Hanafi school.

Course Reading Material

The course will cover Kitab al-Hayd in Al-Tatarkhaniyya (excluding the isti’naf and mudhillah sections). It is highly recommended for students to read the text of Al-Muhit al-Burhani along with this.

While the text of Al-Tatarkhaniyya is based on Al-Muhit al-Burhani, it differs in that it presents multiple case laws (masa’il) without going into evidentiary proofs. The author primarily quotes from Al-Muhit, while adding relevant portions from other juristic texts. A better understanding of this will be ascertained as we complete the reading.
