The first level was an in-depth study of Imam Ibn ‘Abidin al-Shami’s commentary on Birgivi’s Manual (Manhal al-Waridin). This level focused primarily on Imam Abu Yusuf’s rulings.

The second level delved into relevant sections of the Fatawa Tatarkhaniyya and the Muhit Burhani. In this level, Imam Muhammad’s foundational principles of menstruation and purity rulings were extracted with a comparative analysis between the commonly applied views of Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad, along with an exploration of other important opinions within the Hanafi school.

Now, in this third level, students will further develop their understanding of menstruation (hayd) and purity (tuhr) rulings learnt from Levels 1 and 2 by engaging with the influential Mabsut of Shams al-A’immah Imam Muhammad Abu Bakr al-Sarakhsi (d. 483).

Imam Sarakhsi and his Mabsut

Shams al-A’immah Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Sarakhsi (d. 483 AH / 1090 CE) was a towering Hanafi jurist, legal theorist, and scholar whose works remain foundational to the Hanafi madhhab.

Born in the city of Sarakhs, in present-day Turkmenistan, he studied under the esteemed Hanafi jurist Imam ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Halwani.

Due to Imam al-Sarakhsi’s exceptional mastery, he was honoured with the title Shams al-A’immah – The Sun of the Imams.

His most celebrated contribution is the Mabsut, a comprehensive encyclopaedic commentary on Hanafi jurisprudence. Remarkably, he authored this monumental work entirely from memory while imprisoned in a well in Uzgend (in present-day Uzbekistan). Despite the harsh conditions, he dictated the content to his students, preserving knowledge during a time of personal hardship. In the Mabsut, Imam al-Sarakhsi does not merely list rulings; rather, he offers detailed legal reasoning, critical analysis, and engagement with differing opinions - making the work an enduring guide for students, scholars, and jurists alike.

May Allah bless Imam al-Sarakhsi, elevate his rank, and allow us to benefit from his legacy.
